Lady Gaga

Okay, I don't listen to a lot of pop. In fact, I hate most pop princesses. So what is it about Lady Gaga? Why do I LIKE her....
Well, I think the first thing that caught my attention was her videos. I took a semester on surreal and experimental films and I learned to interpret all different sorts of imagery, and her videos presented a nice challenge. It's not like other videos that just show a bunch of people dancing in a club. And she is actually making a statement that isn't "Everyone look at me! I'm hot!" because Gaga doesn't NEED looks to pull off her career. She has genuine talent in voice, instrument, writing, and visuals. Unlike most pop divas, she has something substantial to offer. At first listen, her music does sound like typical pop and disco. However, upon further investigation, it seems clear that she didn't really write it that way. It seems that she writes her songs in more of a lounge club style, and then she adds the beats to make it relatable to everyone. Sell out? Maybe. But at least she does write it herself.
She is a child prodigy/tragedy. Most child prodigies grow up to be very very weird. Why? Because they feel they have no place in this world. They are smarter than everyone their own age, but lack the maturity of those with their intelligence level. So they end up pushing themselves to be older, or dumbing themselves down to fit in with their age group. Gaga ended up at NYU, but then ended up doing drugs and dancing in a go-go club. Her father stopped speaking to her, believing she was genuinely crazy. But hell, the crazy ones write the best music and make the best art. So I suppose that is why I am always drawn to crazy. They give me something to think about.
